A “mare’s nest” refers to a complex and difficult situation, or an illusory discovery. I keep returning to this term not only because it brings to mind a tangle of fibers and specific animal reference, but also for the sense of time and disappointment inherent in that second definition. One makes a celebrated discovery, which later turns out to be an illusion, or worthless.
