The rapunzels are odes to fairy tale maidens of childhood stories, the familiar and uncomfortably limited role models that whisper through the cultures of adult women of all ages and backgrounds. I'm personally a fan of the older, darker tales in which even the virtuous characters seem not to have innocent motives, or survive unscathed (if they survive at all.)
